You washed the towels on Friday. They came out smelling clean, folded into neat stacks, returned to the shelf. By the second use they feel oddly stiff — a little scratchy against the skin, a little grey where they used to be white. Nothing is wrong with the towels. Nothing is wrong with how you washed them. The culprit is something you cannot see, dissolved invisibly in the water itself.

In the UAE, where nearly all tap water begins as seawater, this is one of the most common and least understood reasons laundry stops looking its best. It has a name, and once you understand it, a lot of small household mysteries start to make sense.

The water here is harder than most people realise

Hard water is simply water carrying a high concentration of dissolved minerals, chiefly calcium and magnesium. The Gulf supplies almost all of the region’s drinking water, which is desalinated and then re-mineralised before it reaches your taps. That process leaves UAE tap water sitting consistently in the “hard” to “very hard” range — commonly measured between 150 and 400 parts per million of calcium carbonate, frequently above the 180 ppm threshold international guidelines use to define “very hard” water.

For drinking, this is perfectly safe and, for many, rather pleasant. For laundry, it changes the chemistry of every wash in ways that are easy to feel and hard to diagnose.

What hard water actually does to a wash

Detergent works by surrounding particles of dirt and oil and lifting them away from fabric. But calcium and magnesium ions get there first. They bind to the cleaning agents in your detergent before those agents can reach the grime, effectively neutralising a portion of every scoop you pour in. This is why a wash that would lather generously in soft water produces a thin, reluctant foam here.

The minerals don’t simply disappear, either. They settle into the weave of fabric as a fine, chalky residue. Over dozens of washes that residue accumulates — stiffening towels, greying whites, and dulling the colours you bought the garment for in the first place. The fabric feels rough not because it is worn, but because it is, quite literally, coated in mineral deposits.

The instinct that makes it worse

Faced with stiff, dull laundry, most of us reach for the obvious fix: more detergent. It feels logical. It is also the one move that compounds the problem.

Because hard water already consumes part of every dose, the extra you add tends to overwhelm the rinse cycle rather than clean more thoroughly. What the machine can’t rinse away stays behind — a second layer of residue settling on top of the mineral one. The towel ends up carrying both, which is precisely the stiffness you were trying to wash out. More product, in hard water, often means less clean.

What genuinely helps

The good news is that working with hard water is mostly a matter of small, deliberate adjustments rather than dramatic intervention.

• Dose for your water, not the label. Most detergent instructions assume soft water. Measure to what the load actually needs and resist the urge to over-pour.
• Let the rinse do its job. An extra rinse, where your machine allows it, clears far more residue than an extra scoop of detergent ever could.
• Don’t overload the drum. Fabric needs room to move so water can carry minerals away rather than press them in.
• Wash whites a touch warmer. Where the fabric care label permits, slightly warmer water helps lift mineral buildup that cold cycles leave behind.
• Choose a detergent that doses precisely. The less guesswork in the amount, the less residue your hard water has to work with.
